INTRODUCTION TO LIFE
Creative input: writer, director
Immersive audio installation. R&D. 2023
Introduction to Life is a rigidly structured immersive audio performance that distils the human experience into a series of clinical, algorithmic outcomes. Designed for a constrained audience of eight participants, the work strips away traditional theatrical empathy in favour of minimal, dictated interaction. Guided by a detached, emotionless narrator, participants are navigated through a sequence of conceptual ‘zones’ where their survival, progression, or sudden elimination is determined by arbitrary numerical assignment rather than personal agency.

By subjecting participants to sudden termination—whether by illness, conflict, or sheer statistical chance—the piece functions as a sharp critique of bureaucratic apathy and the illusion of autonomy. Death and tragedy are never dramatised; they are simply logged as data points and immediately moved past. This pervasive, clinical neutrality weaponises the absence of empathy, cultivating a profound sense of unease as participants are forced to confront their status as expendable metrics within an unfeeling system.

Serving as a proof-of-concept for a broader immersive ecosystem, the work purposefully restricts user interaction to enforce a visceral sense of powerlessness. Rather than prescribing a moral or emotional response, Introduction to Life leaves its audience suspended in the uncomfortable friction between systemic determinism and the fragile reality of human survival.
