Here We Are is a short experimental film that transforms a mundane domestic environment into a claustrophobic psychological containment zone. Built upon a non-linear, fragmented structure, the work oscillates between quiet morning routines and jarring somatic memory flashes, exploring the friction between physical presence and a past that clings like a shadow. By restricting the spatial geometry to isolated corners of a home—specifically utilizing mirrors, fogged glass, and the suffocating, immersive motif of water—the film visually externalises the pre-verbal sensations of inner collapse and fragile resilience.

HERE WE ARE

Creative input: writer, director, performer

Operating largely without conventional dialogue, the film relies on intense visual storytelling to communicate how an ordinary space can be haunted by invisible noise. The heavy silence is repeatedly ruptured by an intrusive, distorted voice asking, “What happened to you?”—acting as an unyielding internal system that interrogates the protagonist’s fractured psyche.

Rather than offering narrative closure, the piece culminates in a direct, confrontational monologue delivered down the lens to the audience. This final rupture of the fourth wall serves not as a moment of comfort, but as a visceral gesture of resistance against the loop of trauma: “Fight it. Don’t go yet.” Ultimately, Here We Are functions as a study of endurance, capturing an isolated mind attempting to hold its shape against an invisible tide.

The installation extends the cinematic language of the film beyond the boundaries of the screen, transforming spectatorship into an embodied act of perception. A central projection presents the primary narrative, while two heavily diffused peripheral projections continuously echo and distort the moving image, occupying the audience's peripheral vision and resisting direct observation. Existing at the threshold of visibility, they construct the sensation of looking out from within the protagonist's perceptual world rather than towards it.

This spatial environment is further expanded through the recreation of key domestic elements from within the film, including a table, basin, kettle, teacups, tea, and vape. Rather than functioning as props, these objects operate as physical continuations of the cinematic environment, creating the impression that the audience has entered immediately after the protagonist has left the space. The deliberate overlap between the projected and physical worlds produces a sense of interruption, dissolving the conventional distance between viewer and subject.

Together, the projections and installation elements function as a perceptual containment zone. Rather than witnessing the protagonist's psychological entrapment from the outside, the audience temporarily inhabits the unstable conditions through which it is experienced. By placing viewers within the specificity of one individual's internal world, the work uses embodied experience as a lens through which broader questions surrounding the universal emotional structures that persist beneath identity, language, and personal circumstance can be encountered.

Audience Experience
Visitors enter the installation through a single threshold into a domestic environment that appears recently abandoned. Free to move throughout the space, they encounter the physical remnants of the protagonist's daily life while simultaneously inhabiting their perceptual reality through the surrounding projections and spatial sound. Rather than following a prescribed route, audiences are invited to navigate the installation intuitively, allowing the boundaries between cinematic fiction and physical space to gradually dissolve.

Venue Adaptability

The installation is designed as a modular environment that can be adapted to different gallery dimensions without compromising its conceptual integrity. Projection distances, object placement, and circulation routes may be adjusted in response to the architecture of the hosting venue while preserving the intended relationship between the central narrative projection, peripheral projections, and physical installation elements.
