ARTIST STATEMENT

It has never been about identity for me. It's about what lies beneath it.

You lose it by moving enough times. Language first. Then habit, then whatever you called personality. Everything you thought was "you" turns out to be a place. Eventually you hit something that isn't a place. It has no name. Not anima. Not pathosformeln — that's still costume, just old costume. Underneath both there's something cruder that nobody's bothered to name, because naming it means admitting it's yours too.

I don't think it's rare. I think it's the only thing that isn't. You've cried yourself to sleep this year and told no one. You've stayed somewhere too long because leaving would mean admitting you were wrong, and wrong after this much invested is unforgivable. You've felt like a fraud at the exact moment things stopped being dangerous. None of that needs a reason. Take the danger away and the brain builds one out of nothing — guilt for making it out, dread with no source, the feeling you're getting away with something. It doesn't care what century you're in. It was never about your circumstances. It's about the fact that you're a person, and that was always going to be the problem.

We don't say any of this plainly. We hand it a headline instead — burnout, the news, whatever's loudest that year — something with edges, something we can point at and blame and put down. What I'm after doesn't have edges. It was there before the headline and it'll be there after, sitting exactly where it always sits, underneath whatever you've decided to call your life instead.

That's why the work isn't comforting. Comfort is where this hides best — it's quiet, it doesn't ask anything of you. I'm not trying to fix that or explain it away. I'm trying to sit in the same room as it long enough that you can't pretend you don't recognise it too.
